A family-friendly celebration of local Indigenous culture with storytelling, Worimi art and illuminated puppetry by Curious Legends.
Lenny's Country comes to the Carrington Foreshore on Wednesday 30 September, a family-friendly celebration of local Indigenous culture. It's led by Worimi Elder and artist Aunty Debbie Dates, who turns traditional Worimi stories into artworks that teach cultural connections and values to the youth. The evening brings together storytelling, local Worimi art and yarns about Lenny's Country — the land, the community and the native wildlife — all brought to life through the illuminated puppetry of Curious Legends.
Curious Legends is a Newcastle theatre company that's been around since 2005 and has grown into a nationally and internationally recognised maker of large-scale site-specific works and immersive experiences. They're the ones handling the puppetry here, working alongside Aunty Debbie Dates, Aunty Tammy Towers and the Worimi community. The Throsby Creek Foreshore holds significant cultural importance for the Dates mob and local communities, and the night closes with the unveiling of new illuminated puppets co-created with the community.

It's commissioned by New Annual as part of their free event series, so it's one of those things you can just show up to without worrying about a ticket. The whole thing runs from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, three hours in total, and it's free. If you're around Carrington on the Wednesday, it's a good one to bring the family along for.
