Free screening of the documentary 'The Spies Among Us' about the East German Stasi surveillance state, hosted by Casey Horn at The Main Cinema.
The Main Cinema is screening The Spies Among Us (Spione unter uns) on Thursday, October 22, at 7 PM. It's a 2025 documentary directed by Jamie Coughlin Silverman, Gabriel Silverman, Gernot Grassl, and Marcus Nigsch, with The Grand Post GmbH. The film is in German with English subtitles and will be hosted by Casey Horn.
At its core, the film is about the power of data and what happens when it's turned against a population. It's set thirty years after the Cold War ended and follows Peter Keup, a former political prisoner of the East German secret police who became a historian. Keup is searching for the truth after learning his own brother spied on him for the regime, and through that, the film looks at the lasting effects of living in a surveillance state. It's a personal story that opens up into a larger one about the Stasi's reach and the scars it left behind.
The screening is part of the 5th annual Twin Cities German Film Festival, produced by the Germanic-American Institute in partnership with the Goethe-Institut. The festival runs from October 22 to 25 at The Main Cinema, with a lineup that goes from family-friendly films and documentaries to dramas, all in German with English subtitles. The Spies Among Us kicks things off on the opening night.
