Monthly staff-picks screening of Andrzej Zulawski's 1981 horror film 'Possession', hosted by a Main Cinema staff member.
The Main Cinema is screening Possession on Wednesday, October 28, as part of its Staff Picks series. It's a monthly thing where a staff member picks the film and hosts the night, so you get a bit of a personal introduction before the lights go down. This one is presented by NEMAA in partnership with MSP Film Society.
Possession is Andrzej Zulawski's 1981 nightmare of a marriage unraveling, and it was banned when it first came out. The story follows Mark, a spy who returns to his home in West Berlin to find his wife, Anna, insistent on a divorce. As her behavior gets more and more alarming, he discovers a truth far more sinister than anything he could have suspected. It's a domestic drama that spirals into something much stranger, and it's known for a pulsating score and visceral imagery.
Two of the biggest draws here are the performances. Sam Neill is one half of the pairing, and Isabelle Adjani takes the other—her work in the film earned her Best Actress at Cannes. Between the two of them, it's some of the most haunting acting ever captured on screen, and it's the kind of thing that works best in a theater rather than on a laptop at home.
