Minnesota premiere screening of 'The Sea', Israel's submission to the 98th Academy Awards, at The Main Cinema as part of the Twin Cities Jewish Film Festival.
The Main Cinema is bringing The Sea to Minneapolis on Tuesday, October 27, as part of the Twin Cities Jewish Film Festival. It's a Minnesota premiere, presented by Rimon's Jewish Arts Collective and the Israel Center of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation.
Written and directed by Shai Carmeli-Pollak, The Sea follows Khaled, a 12-year-old boy from a Palestinian village who is turned back at a military checkpoint and sets out on his own journey to see the sea. While he's on the move, his father, Ribhi, an undocumented laborer in Israel, is searching for him. The film runs 93 minutes and is shot in Hebrew and Arabic.
It's a neorealist ode to the human spirit, and the comparisons to Vittorio De Sica's Bicycle Thieves and the cinema of Abbas Kiarostami aren't just for showβit's that kind of small, human story told against a larger, more complicated backdrop. It's also Israel's official submission to the 98th Academy Awards for Best International Film, and it picked up a record 13 Israeli Academy Award (Ophir) nominations, winning Best Film and Best Actor.
