Screening of John Hughes' comedy 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles' with a live pre-movie music set by Meatraffle Ska.
The Parkway Theater is screening John Hughes' Planes, Trains and Automobiles on Wednesday, November 25, with a live set by Meatraffle Ska before the movie. The film is rated R and follows Neal Page, played by Steve Martin, whose flight home is rerouted to Kansas by a snowstorm, forcing him to share a ride with Del Griffith, the talkative shower curtain salesman played by John Candy. It's one of Hughes' best comedies, and seeing it in a theater is a different experience than catching it on a TV screen.
Meatraffle Ska handles the pre-movie music, and they're a live band with horns. They describe their sound as a mix of first-wave ska, rock steady, and afrobeat, fronted by Guy Messenger on guitar and vocals and Reid Rejsa on vocals. The live horns are a big part of that—the kind of sound that fills a room before the lights go down and the movie starts. If you're not familiar with them, it's a good chance to catch them live.
The screening is part of a comedy series The Parkway is running, which also programs Superbad (2007) and Friday (1995). There's a $30 movie pass available that covers the screenings and includes a free bag of popcorn with each one. All the screenings are general admission, so there are no assigned seats.
