Screening of the new 4K restoration of Ken Russell's 1971 film 'The Devils', starring Vanessa Redgrave and Oliver Reed.
MSP Film is bringing Ken Russell's The Devils to Theater 3 this weekend, and it's a version worth seeing on a big screen. The film is a 1971 period piece that's built a reputation as a prescient epic of obsession and corruption, and this particular print is a new 4K restoration assembled from the original camera negative. It follows the edit Russell privately constructed in 2004, so it's the uncut and unfiltered theatrical experience he always envisioned.
Russell wrote the screenplay himself and directed it, and the restoration brings back the full creative team: David Watkin's cinematography, Michael Bradsell's editing, and Peter Maxwell Davies' score. It stars Academy Award winner Vanessa Redgrave opposite Oliver Reed, with Dudley Sutton and Gemma Jones in the supporting cast. The film runs 115 minutes and carries an NC-17 rating, so it's definitely for a more mature crowd.
