Jazz concert by guitarist Alejandro Urzagaste and his quintet, with pianist Bill Carrothers, bassist Anthony Cox and drummer Ethan Kogan.
Alejandro Urzagaste brings his quintet to Jazz Central Studios on Thursday, November 12, from 8 PM to 9:30 PM. Urzagaste is a midwestern guitarist of South American descent, and the set centers on the group's latest release, Universal Translation, which they've put together as a program in story form. The opening track, "Argent Messages," is a nod to Horace Silver, and it was recorded by Miles Hanson at Creation Audio here in Minneapolis back in March 2023.
Urzagaste has played with a wide range of names over the years, including Jodie Christian, Von Freeman, Rodney Whitaker, Fred Anderson, and Malachi Favors, and he's toured with Deana Martin and the Minneapolis act 12Rods. For this show, he's joined by a seasoned group. Pianist Bill Carrothers has been a professional for over 25 years, headlined the Rising Star Tour across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland in 2000, and has credits with Joe Beck, Dave Douglas, Charlie Rouse, and Benny Wallace. Bassist Anthony Cox is a Minneapolis native who has worked with Geri Allen, John Scofield, and Pat Metheny. Drummer Ethan Kogan is a Chicago-born, New York-based conceptualist who has performed with Wallace Roney, Cassandra Wilson, and Frank Lacy.
