Big band of eighteen Twin Cities musicians blending jazz and Latin rhythms at Jazz Central Studios.
Twin Cities Latin Jazz Orchestra plays Jazz Central Studios on Tuesday, October 27, from 8:30 to 10:00 PM. It's a full big band on the stage, and the set is exactly what the name says: Latin jazz.
Trumpeter Geoffrey West Senn and percussionist Mac Santiago started the orchestra back in 2014. Since then, they've built it around eighteen of the Twin Cities' most accomplished musicians, and that's the scale you'll see on Tuesday night. It's a large ensemble, so the sound has a weight to it that a smaller combo can't quite match. The music pulls from two different worlds—the big band jazz tradition and the rhythmic intensity of Latin music—and the two meet in the middle. When eighteen musicians hit a phrase together, it's a lot of sound coming at you at once.
