17-piece big band of jazz musicians plays all original big band music at Jazz Central Studios in the Old St. Anthony neighborhood.
The Bill Simenson Orchestra is back at Jazz Central Studios on Tuesday, November 3, from 8:30 to 10:30 PM. It's a 17-piece big band, and the night is presented in part by MRAC.
If you're wondering what that looks like on stage, here's the breakdown: five saxes, four trumpets, and four trombones make up the horn section, with guitar, piano, bass, and drums filling out the rhythm. All seventeen play together, and the set is all original big band music. It's not a night of standards or covers; everything they play is their own.
This isn't a one-off, either. The Bill Simenson Orchestra has played the first Tuesday of every month at Jazz Central Studios since June 2012, so this is part of a long-running residency. The venue itself is a 501(c)(3) non-profit committed to strengthening the Twin Cities jazz community through performances, workshops, and educational programs. It sits in the Old St. Anthony neighborhood on the west bank of the Mississippi, and it live-streams its shows on Friday and Saturday nights, and select Thursdays, from 8 to 9:30 PM.
