Free creative writing workshop with author Laura Baggaley exploring 'thrutopian' futures and climate myths, part of Green Libraries Week.
Laura Baggaley is running a creative writing workshop at the British Library on Thursday 22 October, from 17:00 to 18:30. It's held in The Last Word, in the Piazza, and it's open to anyone over 16. The session is free, though you'll need to book your place through Eventbrite beforehand.
Baggaley is an award-winning author of two eco-themed dystopian novels for teenagers, Dirt and Nourish, both published by Habitat Press. Dirt took home Best Book for Teenicians at the Wishing Shelf Book Awards and made the shortlist for the Rubery Book Award. When she's not writing, she teaches creative writing, literature and drama at City Lit, so she's as used to leading a room as she is to sitting at a desk.
The workshop is part of Green Libraries Week at the British Library, a programme of sustainability events and activities. That sits within the Green Libraries Hub project, a national initiative led by CILIP and funded by the National Lottery, which looks at how libraries can support communities taking climate action. The session itself takes on misinformation and climate myths head-on and introduces 'thrutopian' futures — a genre that sits somewhere between dystopia and utopia. You'll work through writing exercises like letters from the future, imagining paths from today towards something better.
