Workshop for 12-14 year olds that brings Shakespeare's The Tempest to life through activities and games on the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse stage.
Shakespeare's Globe is running a workshop on The Tempest for 12-14 year olds at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse on Monday 26 October, starting at 12.15 pm. It's an hour and a half, led by one of the Globe's education practitioners, and it's all about getting the play on its feet rather than just reading it off a page.
The session works through the play with practical activities and games that pull out its language, characters and themes. No previous experience is needed: it's pitched as a way to get a better handle on Shakespeare and theatre if you're studying them, or as a chance for young actors and Shakespeare fans to actually tread the boards. The whole thing takes place on one of the Globe's two iconic stages, so it's a proper introduction to how the work lives in a theatre.
For parents, there's food and drink to be had while the workshop is running, though you'll need to be there for drop-off and pick-up. The session itself is held in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, the indoor theatre next door to the main Globe. It's modelled on the Jacobean playhouses and hosts productions and workshops through the winter months when the outdoor Globe is closed. The main Globe is an oak-and-thatch replica of the Elizabethan original, founded by Sam Wanamaker and standing just 230 metres from the site of the first one.
