Drop-in family session of the Young V&A October Half Term festival to watch Wallace & Gromit: A Grand Day Out and draw rockets and cheese creations.
Relax, Watch & Make! runs at the Young V&A from Thursday 29 to Saturday 31 October, as part of the museum's October Half Term festival. It's a drop-in session in the Community Room, so you can pop in whenever suits you across the three days rather than committing to a fixed time.
The whole thing is built around Aardman Animations' Wallace & Gromit: A Grand Day Out (1989), which plays on the hour at 12:00, 13:00, 14:00 and 15:00. The short is a classic for a reason: it's got the stop-motion charm, the eccentric inventions, and a plot that takes the duo from their semi-detached in Northern England to the moon in search of cheese. If you're there with kids, you can catch it at the start of the hour and then spend the rest of the time working on your own version of the story.
That's where the 'make' part comes in. The session is framed as 'creative downtime' for families, and the idea is to take the playful contraptions and food-related twists from the film and re-imagine them on paper. You'll be doodling rockets and lunar cheese creations with low-fi drawing materials and simple stencils, so it's more about sketching and messing about than anything high-pressure. It's the kind of thing that works just as well if you're five as if you're forty, as long as you're happy to let your imagination run a bit wild.

For context, Young V&A is the V&A's family-friendly space, designed around hands-on making, play and learning drawn from the museum's collection and temporary exhibitions. The museum itself is free, and this session is a drop-in for all ages, with children accompanied by an adult. It runs from 12:00 to 16:00 on Thursday 29, Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October, at the Community Room, Cambridge Heath Road, Bethnal Green, London, E2 9PA. Entry is free.
