Sensory theatre piece for babies and toddlers aged 0 to 2, with movement, live music and visual poetry, by Engruna Teatre.
Univers runs at the Barbican Centre from 2 to 12 December, a sensory experience built for babies and toddlers aged 0 to 2. It's a mix of movement, live music and visual poetry, and it's designed for the smallest audience the Barbican usually hosts.
On stage, people, performers and objects move, scatter and rearrange themselves in an immersive production that invites little ones to reflect, touch and interact. The whole thing draws on the fragile balance of the universe, where even the smallest thing can create unexpected change, and it's meant to encourage vulnerability, adaptability and exploration. It's less about sitting still and watching and more about letting the kids engage with what's happening around them.
Behind it is Engruna Teatre, a women-led company based in Catalonia that works with both adults and children. They describe their approach as using art to create new forms of expression beyond words, which fits a show aimed at an audience that hasn't quite mastered them yet. The Barbican, on Silk Street, is a Grade II listed building opened in 1982 and known as an icon of Brutalist style, housing theatres, galleries, concert halls and cinemas alongside a large conservatory with over 1,500 species of plants and trees.
