Free drop-in Open Studio workshop where families with children aged 5 to 14 design and make something together from a creative brief.
Young V&A is running the Family Design Challenge from Thursday 29 to Saturday 31 October, as part of its wider half-term festival. It's an Open Studio workshop in the Design Gallery, and it's built for families to problem-solve, design and make together. The grown-ups work alongside the children — usually aged 5 to 14 — to tackle a creative brief set by a designer, drawing inspiration from objects on display in the museum and getting hands-on with a range of materials and tools, with creative facilitators on hand to help. When you're finished, you can take your creation home or leave it on display in the Open Studio.
It's a drop-in session, so you don't need to book a specific slot in advance. On busier days, the afternoon runs as up to six timed 30-minute sessions, with queuing opening ten minutes before each one and capacity limited to 50 participants. If you're planning to go on a Friday or Saturday, it's worth keeping that in mind and arriving a bit early.
