Terrarium masterclass in which guests build their own self-sustaining ecosystem inside an authentic Kraken Rum bottle, with two cocktails from the bar's Kraken menu.
The Rhum Tavern is hosting The Krakens Living Relic: Terrarium Masterclass on Wednesday 21 October, with London Terrariums leading the session. It's a 60 to 90-minute workshop where you build your own self-sustaining ecosystem inside an authentic Kraken Rum bottle. The whole thing is built around a bit of Kraken lore: a merchant ship carrying barrels of Kraken Black Spiced Rum and Caribbean spices was dragged under by the beast, and only a handful of barrels resurfaced, stained black with the Kraken's ink. Inside one of them, nature took hold and turned the barrel into a thriving miniature world. That's the story you'll be recreating, bottle by bottle.
It's not just about the planting, either. The session covers the history and science of terrariums, from the Victorian plant hunters who first brought the practice to the UK to the culture's resurgence in the 1970s. You'll walk away with your own living relic to take home, and the ticket includes two cocktails from the bar's exclusive Kraken menu, so you can sip while you work.
The venue itself fits the theme. The Rhum Tavern is a craft cocktail bar styled as the hull of a 1650s pirate ship called The Inferno, and it stocks more than 400 rum expressions. If you're into rum, there's plenty to explore beyond the two drinks included in the ticket.
