Screening of Gurinder Chadha's film 'Bhaji on the Beach', written by Meera Syal, within Tate Britain's 'The 90s on Screen' series.
Tate Britain is screening Bhaji on the Beach on Saturday 30 January, from 15:00 to 17:00 in the Clore Auditorium. It's part of The 90s on Screen, a film series the gallery is running that looks back at the changing face of British culture through the films that defined the decade. The screening sits alongside The 90s: Art and Fashion, an exhibition curated by Edward Enninful OBE, which the curators describe as the first to explore the art, photography and fashion of a decade synonymous with possibility, optimism and an audacious spirit. That show brings together more than 100 photographs, paintings, sculptures and garments by nearly 70 artists, photographers and designers, from the Young British Artists to Alexander McQueen, and draws on Enninful's own experience of the years that shaped it.
Bhaji on the Beach is a frank British comedy directed by Gurinder Chadha and written by Meera Syal. The story follows a group of women from an Asian women's centre who take a day trip to see the Blackpool lights, and tensions soon begin to rise. It's rated 15. The film is one of the titles the series is using to revisit the decade, so it's worth seeing it as part of that wider conversation rather than just a standalone screening.
