Screening of the 1990s dancehall film 'Babymother' at The Clore Auditorium, part of Tate Britain's 'The 90s on Screen' series.
Babymother is screening at Tate Britain on Saturday 13 February, from 15:00 to 17:00 in the Clore Auditorium. It's part of The 90s on Screen, a film series celebrating iconic cinema from the decade, which opened with Danny Boyle's Trainspotting. The screening runs alongside The 90s: Art and Fashion, an exhibition curated by Edward Enninful OBE, whose own experience of the nineties shapes the show.
That exhibition brings together over 100 photographs, paintings, sculptures and garments by nearly 70 artists, photographers and designers. It runs from the Young British Artists to Alexander McQueen, with images by Juergen Teller, David Sims and Corinne Day alongside work by Steve McQueen, Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas and Yinka Shonibare, and collections by Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and John Galliano. The whole thing re-evaluates the nineties as a transformative moment in British art and culture.
Within that, Babymother is described as a vibrant celebration of London's dancehall scene, centred on music, performance and the energy of 1990s Black British culture. It's a good fit for the wider series, which looks at the decade through film while the exhibition does the same through art and fashion.
