Free screening of Saodat Ismailova's short film 'Melted Into the Sun', a meditation on memory, perception and the mystic Al-Muqannaʿ.
Saodat Ismailova is showing Melted Into the Sun at the V&A South Kensington, in Gallery 99. It's a cinematic short film that looks at memory, perception and mythology, and it's on now until Sunday 28 February 2027.
Ismailova's work generally explores the links between memory, perception, mythology and the moving image, and she draws on the intellectual and oral traditions of Central Asia. Melted Into the Sun takes its starting point from Al-Muqannaʿ ('The Veiled One'), an eighth-century mystic and political rebel from southern Central Asia. His legacy is marked by conflicting interpretations: Soviet historians celebrated him as a proto-socialist revolutionary, while many Islamic traditions remember him as an impostor. Legend says Al-Muqannaʿ concealed a light so intense it would blind anyone who looked upon it; Ismailova turns that veil into a meditation on the instability of truth.
