One-woman comedy turned psychological thriller by Hannah Reilly about a feminist podcaster who reinvents herself for fame and loses herself in the performance.
ROLEPLAY opens at Soho Theatre on 22 October, running through to 21 November. It's a one-woman show written and performed by Hannah Reilly, an award-winning Australian comic known for what Elle called her 'fresh, female-first approach'. This is her first international stage work, and it arrives in London after a sold-out run at Summerhall during the Edinburgh Fringe, where it was named a Top Pick by The Guardian, Time Out and The Telegraph.
The story follows a struggling feminist podcaster who reinvents herself in pursuit of fame, only to lose herself in the performance. It starts as a comedy and shifts into a psychological thriller, and it's an NSFW interrogation of modern sex, the commodification of feminism and the era of the personal brand, all set against influencer culture and the monetisation of identity. It's described as darkly hilarious, gripping and surreal.
Behind the scenes, it's a major collaboration between two big names in theatre: Francesca Moody Productions, behind Fleabag and Baby Reindeer, and Global Creatures, the team behind Moulin Rouge! The Musical and Muriel's Wedding The Musical. Reilly wrote and performs the piece herself, and it was developed and directed by Paige Rattray.
