The Royal Shakespeare Company's award-winning musical adaptation of Roald Dahl's novel, celebrating 15 years in the West End.
Matilda The Musical is playing at the Cambridge Theatre in Covent Garden, and it's one of the West End's longest-running modern musicals. The story follows Matilda Wormwood, a brilliant girl who stands up to her neglectful parents and the tyrannical headmistress Miss Trunchbull, with a bit of help from her teacher Miss Honey. Jon Robyns is currently playing Miss Trunchbull.
It's the Royal Shakespeare Company's stage adaptation of Roald Dahl's novel, with a book by Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, developed and directed by Matthew Warchus. It premiered at the RSC's Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in December 2010 before transferring to the West End in October 2011, where it's now celebrating 15 years. In 2012 it won a record seven Olivier Awards, the most ever awarded to a musical at the time, and it's since collected over 100 international awards, including 25 for Best Musical. The Independent called it 'a roaring triumph' and The Guardian an 'exhilarating, joyous explosion of imagination'.
The show runs about 2 hours 35 minutes, including one interval, and is recommended for ages 6 and up, with under 4s not admitted. The Cambridge Theatre is on Earlham Street in Seven Dials, with Covent Garden as the nearest tube station.
