Free dance session led by Grounded Movement to explore Lindy Hop and funk social dances, with seated adaptations for all levels.
Grounded Movement are taking over The Clore Ballroom on Friday 23 October, from 3pm to 6pm, for a three-hour session that runs through the worlds of jazz and funk. It's led by Temujin Gill and Sunanda Biswas, the choreographic duo behind Grounded Movement, with resident dancers Damien Anyasi and Natasha Khamjani on hand to provide seated adaptations for every move. The whole thing is free, and you don't need a ticket to join in.
Gill and Biswas bring more than 30 years of experience in dance and theatre to the room. Their work draws on African-derived, social and street dance culture, and they first debuted at Sadler's Wells Breakin' Convention back in 2013. The session is pitched less as a class and more as an invitation: no leotard required, no prior dance experience needed, and no partner to bring along. They describe it as kinder to the limbs than most gyms, and because every move is offered with a seated version, anyone can take part regardless of mobility.
The focus here is jazz and funk, and the session moves through them in order. You'll pick up 1930s Lindy Hop before moving on to the expressive, interactive funk social dances that came later. It's a good way to see how the two styles connect, and you can take as much or as little of it as you like.
