Sensory workshop for toddlers aged 1-3 and their guardians, combining hands-on play with museum objects from the Young V&A's Play Gallery.
Young V&A is running Mini Play for Toddlers this October, a sensory workshop series for toddlers aged 1-3 and their guardians. It's held in the Play Studio within the museum's Learning Centre on Cambridge Heath Road in Bethnal Green, and the sessions run on 2, 5, 9, 12, 16 and 19 October, from 13:30 to 15:00. The whole thing is inspired by the museum's Play Gallery, so it's built around the kind of child-led, hands-on play you'd find there.
Each 90-minute session follows a steady rhythm: ten minutes to settle in, 60 minutes of free play, and 20 minutes of circle time. The messy, open-ended play is guided by a bespoke set of Sensory Tiles designed and made by Play Build Play, and the artists draw on themes and objects from the Play Gallery to shape each one. The Monday sessions, in particular, focus on playful activities inspired by nature, words and food.
Two artists lead the workshops: Natalie Zervou-Kerruish takes the Friday sessions, and artist and author Ella Phillips runs the Mondays. It's a good way to spend a couple of hours with a toddler in a space that's actually designed for them to get stuck in, rather than just to look around. The Young V&A itself was named Art Fund Museum of the Year 2024, so the whole place is built around play and discovery.
