Family workshop led by clay artist Nanami Takeuchi in which children aged 5-11 design and shape their own 3D air-dry clay character.
Nanami Takeuchi is leading a clay character workshop for kids aged 5-11 at Young V&A from Thursday 29 to Saturday 31 October. It's held in the Play Studio within the Learning Centre, so if you're coming from across town, that's in Bethnal Green, Cambridge Heath Road, E2 9PA.
Takeuchi is a clay artist and illustrator, and the whole session is built around the playful style of Aardman Studios. The kids start by imagining and designing their own character — happy, colourful, silly, grumpy, big or small, whatever they fancy — and then bring it to life by shaping it from air-dry clay. The best part is that they get to take the finished character home with them.
It ties in with Inside Aardman: Wallace & Gromit and Friends, the behind-the-scenes look at Aardman's stop-motion animation that's running at the museum right now. That exhibition closes on 15 November, so if you're planning to do the workshop, you've still got time to see the original clay work that inspired it. Young V&A itself is a museum in Bethnal Green where children, young people and families are invited to imagine, play and design, and it was named Art Fund Museum of the Year 2024.

There are two sessions each day: 11.00-13.00 and 14.00-16.00, running across Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Tickets are £15, and only the children aged 5-11 need one — adults have to participate alongside their children, so you'll be right there in the thick of it.
