Matthew Bourne's reimagining of Cinderella set in wartime London, celebrating the 30th anniversary of New Adventures at Sadler's Wells.
Matthew Bourne's New Adventures bring Cinderella back to Sadler's Wells from 1 December 2026 to 17 January 2027. It's a 30th anniversary celebration of one of the company's most popular works, and the run stretches well into the new year, so there's plenty of room to fit it in around the holidays.
Bourne's version moves the fairytale to London during the Second World War. At its heart is a wartime romance between Cinderella and a young RAF pilot, whose chance meeting leads to a magical night together before they're parted by the horrors of the Blitz. It's a long way from the glass slipper and the pumpkin carriage, and the wartime setting changes the whole tone of the story.
The staging draws on Olivier Award-winning designs by Lez Brotherston, with lighting by Neil Austin and video and projection designs by Duncan McLean. Sound design is by Paul Groothuis, all set to Prokofiev's score. The show runs 2 hours and 20 minutes including two intervals, and it's recommended for ages 8 and over. There are a few content warnings to keep in mind: smoke and haze, strobe lighting, and loud noises like explosions and sirens.
