Birmingham Royal Ballet revives its production of Swan Lake, with the Royal Ballet Sinfonia playing Tchaikovsky's score live.
Birmingham Royal Ballet bring Swan Lake to Sadler's Wells Theatre from Wednesday 28 to Saturday 31 October, with the Royal Ballet Sinfonia performing Tchaikovsky's score live in the pit. It's a revival of the production by the company's Founding Director Laureate, Sir Peter Wright, who worked on it with Galina Samsova. The story is the one you know: Prince Siegfried comes across a flock of swans and is captivated when one turns into the beautiful Odette, who explains she's held in swan form from dawn to dusk by an evil spell cast by Baron von Rothbart.
CΓ©line Gittens takes on the double role of Odette and Odile, the white and black swans. The choreography is by Peter Wright and Lev Ivanov, with designs by Philip Prowse and lighting by Peter Teigen, adapted by Johnny Westall-Eyre. Company Director Carlos Acosta says the work has been loved for decades and across generations, bringing many people to ballet for the first time. The revival follows the company's summer celebrations of 100 years of Sir Peter Wright's contributions, and critics have called it 'one of the best Swan Lakes around' (The Daily Express), 'supremely classy' (The Daily Telegraph) and 'a quality and spectacle that is simply awesome' (Birmingham Mail).
