Free interactive pop-up evening with talks and hands-on activities from conservation and Egyptology researchers about coffin conservation research.
Marks of a Maker: The Stories Coffins Tell Us comes to the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology on Tuesday 17 November, from 6:00pm to 8:30pm. It's an interactive pop-up staged inside the museum's Object Based Learning Laboratory, and it opens up new coffin conservation research to the public.
The Petrie Museum, named after the founding father of modern Egyptology and housed within University College London, is a classic old-fashioned collection of antiquities displayed in glass cases, and it's free to visit. This particular evening takes you inside the lab, where you'll walk through the methods used across a recent conservation project: pigment analysis, photographic and digital heritage imaging, wood technology, and experimental archaeology. Along the way, you'll meet the researchers behind the work.
The night mixes talks with hands-on activities led by the team. Dr Kate Fulcher is a conservation lecturer at the Institute of Archaeology specialising in ancient painting media; technician Antonio Reis is on hand; and Egyptologist Dr Geoffrey Killen is a leading historian of ancient furniture and a pioneer in experimental archaeology. Between them, they'll be talking through the research and guiding the practical side of the evening.
