Live concert by Grammy-nominated Malian singer-songwriter Fatoumata Diawara, with Thanda Choir, at the Roundhouse.
Fatoumata Diawara plays the Roundhouse on Wednesday 18 November, with the Thanda Choir joining her on stage. Diawara is a Grammy-nominated Malian singer-songwriter, guitarist and actress, and a magnetic force in contemporary African music. She sings in her mother tongue, Bambara, turning deeply personal stories into universal messages of hope, resilience and freedom. A fearless storyteller, she confronts subjects such as female genital mutilation and forced marriage with honesty and courage, and on stage is bold, emotional and playful, widely regarded as a true icon of modern African music.
Her debut album, Fatou (2011), blends Wassoulou traditions, folk guitar and contemporary sounds, and she's worked with Damon Albarn, Herbie Hancock, Disclosure, Gorillaz and Lamomali. The Thanda Choir will be with her for this one, adding their voices to the mix.
The Roundhouse itself is a Grade II* listed former railway engine shed dating from 1846. Its 3,300-capacity circular industrial interior is held up by 24 cast-iron columns and ringed by a wraparound balcony, which creates an immersive atmosphere for touring acts.
