Cat Power (Chan Marshall) plays 'The Greatest' in full, marking the 20th anniversary of her 2006 album, at The Roundhouse.
Cat Power plays The Roundhouse on Tuesday 3 November, performing The Greatest in full. It's the twentieth anniversary of the album, which came out in January 2006, and she'll be playing the whole thing through, with songs from across her catalogue added on around it.
The Greatest was Cat Power's seventh studio album, recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis with the Memphis Rhythm Band, including guitarist Teenie Hodges. It was the first album she'd written entirely herself, and she set the songs to soul horns and strings, blending soul and blues with a quiet Southern warmth. It went on to be her biggest commercial success, entering the Billboard 200 at #34, and won the 2006 Shortlist Music Prize — the first album by a female artist to do so. It also earned a Brit Award nomination for Best International Female Vocal.
Behind the name is Chan Marshall, born Charlyn Marie Marshall in Atlanta in 1972 to a blues pianist and raised across the American South. She recorded her first two albums in a single day with Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley before signing to Matador. The venue itself has its own history: The Roundhouse was built in 1846-1847 as a railway engine shed to Robert Stephenson's designs.
