Free beginner making workshop introducing tools, materials, digital making and basic electronics at the Royal Docks Centre for Sustainability.
CDT Maker Club is running its autumn beginner programme at the Royal Docks Centre for Sustainability (RDCS), with the final session on Monday 26 October. It's a four-week course that serves as the club's entry point for the season, designed to get you comfortable with the practical skills behind making. Over the month, it covers tools and materials, digital making, basic electronics, and the safe use of MakerSpace equipment. The whole thing is built for people with no previous technical experience, so you don't need to have ever picked up a soldering iron or opened a piece of software to get involved.
Once you've run through the basics, the idea is that you can keep going on your own projects and start contributing to the club's larger events, showcases and activity throughout the year. It's not just a one-off course; it's a way into a wider community. The club also runs a pattern making masterclass and an electronics and repair fundamentals course, so there are other directions to take once you've got the foundations down.
The CDT Maker Club itself is a student-and-community-run space at the University of East London's Royal Docks Centre for Sustainability, where anyone can explore, make and innovate. It's run by the university's Computer Science & Digital Technologies (CDT) department, which programmes practical workshops, talks, demonstrations and creative sessions led by members of the UEL and wider Maker Club community. It welcomes students, staff and the wider community alike, and no previous technical experience is required.
