The IPS School Board Candidate Forum 2026 is happening at the Indianapolis Public Library - Central Library on Monday, October 19. It's being presented by WFYI and Chalkbeat Indiana, and it's the first bipartisan gathering of the 2026 Indianapolis Public Schools Board race—the first partisan school board election in the city's history. Five of the seven board seats are up for grabs, with all five incumbents running for re-election and 15 candidates in the field, including one write-in.

District 2 features Bryan Duarte (Democrat) and Hasaan Rashid (Democrat). District 3 has Daqavise D. Winston (Democrat), Lauren Eugene Heger (Democrat), Hope Duke Star (Democrat), and Derek Redelman (Independent). The race comes at a turning point for the district. The new Indianapolis Public Education Corporation has taken over key responsibilities from the school board, and the outcome of a November tax referendum will shape the budget—officials estimate around $20 million in cuts even if it passes. WFYI and Chalkbeat Indiana are also publishing a voting guide covering the candidates, so you can read up before you go. Pre-registration is appreciated but not required. Doors open at 5:30 PM, and the program begins at 6:00 PM. Admission is free.
