Evening with astronaut Kellie Gerardi, the 90th woman to fly to space, in which she shares her research on women's health in space, moderated by Brandi Smith.
Kellie Gerardi will be at Space Center Houston on Thursday, November 5, for a talk as part of the venue's Thought Leader Series. The evening is a conversation with Gerardi, a commercial research astronaut and the 90th woman to fly to space, a journey she made aboard a Virgin Galactic research mission. The discussion will be moderated by Brandi Smith.
Since that first flight, Gerardi has worked with biomedical and women's health researchers to study how spaceflight affects the human body. Much of that work has been with the International Institute for Astronautical Sciences, where she's looked into insulin resistance and fluid dynamics. She's also spent a lot of time on parabolic flights—those zero-G flights that simulate weightlessness—focusing on women's health. The research there has covered everything from lactation in space to IUD insertion in microgravity and changes in the microbiome.
Right now, she's preparing to fly to space again, this time leading an all-female research team. The Thought Leader Series is built around pairing science and technology with personal narrative, so the night will likely balance the technical side of her research with the first-hand account of what it's like to actually leave the planet.
