New stand-up show from Taskmaster alumnus and double Edinburgh Comedy Award winner John Kearns, directed by Jon Brittain.
John Kearns brings his new stand-up show, Tilting at Windmills, to The Stand in Glasgow on Wednesday 21 October. It's his first time back on the Scottish stage since his Sky special The Varnishing Days, and it's a brand-new hour.
Kearns describes the show as a fragmented, digressing portrayal of a 38-year-old man's life. It's allusive and bleak, referencing books he hasn't actually read and touching on the modern condition. If that sounds a bit high-concept for a comedy night, that's exactly the point — it's less of a sequence of punchlines and more of a rambling, self-deprecating look at a life in mid-flight. The Guardian called it "delightful, poetic" and "perfectly structured", while Chortle put it as "about as funny as anything this decade".
You might recognise him from Taskmaster on Channel 4, where he's a regular alumnus, or from Live at the Apollo on the BBC, where he's famously terrified. He's also appeared on Never Mind the Buzzcocks on Sky. This show follows The Varnishing Days, his stand-up special for Sky, and it's directed by Olivier winner Jon Brittain. Between the Taskmaster fame and the double Edinburgh Comedy Award, he's built a bit of a reputation for being one of the more idiosyncratic voices on the circuit, and Tilting at Windmills fits right into that.
