Free panel with authors Val McDermid, Graeme Macrae Burnet and Jo Sharp about writing Scottish fiction from history, marking the National Year of Reading.
Val McDermid, Graeme Macrae Burnet, Jo Sharp (Geographer Royal for Scotland) and Jamie Crawford are coming together for a panel discussion at Augustine United Church on Thursday 10 December, talking about crafting Scottish fiction from historical fact. It's an evening run by the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, founded in 1780 as an independent heritage charity with a global Fellowship of around 2,700 Fellows.
The panel brings together authors from Polygon's Darkland Tales series, which re-imagines stories from Scotland's history, myth and legend. The tales range from a story of murder and conspiracy on a Hebridean island to the failed Darien Scheme of the late 1690s, so the conversation should cover a fair bit of ground. The session closes with a Q&A, and there's a free drinks reception from around 7pm.
It's being presented to mark the National Year of Reading and runs as a hybrid event: you can be in the church in person, or join the live stream online. A recording will be uploaded later to the Society's YouTube channel and Spotify account, so if you can't make the night, you can still catch it. The church is at 41 George IV Bridge, EH1 1EL.
