Historian Bettany Hughes brings the land of the pharaohs vividly to life in a talk exploring Ancient Egypt's innovations and their lasting impact on the modern world.
Bettany Hughes brings her talk Uncovering Ancient Egypt to the Assembly Rooms on Sunday 8 November, as part of a UK tour running from Friday 30 October to Wednesday 18 November. Hughes is an award-winning historian who has spent 25 years turning ancient history into storytelling, and this is her taking that approach to the land of the pharaohs.
In the talk, she looks at how Ancient Egypt's innovations in medicine, mathematics, engineering and governance laid the foundations of the modern world, and how Egyptian ideas about the afterlife, justice and leadership still shape us today. It's not just a look back at the pyramids and the pharaohs, but a way of seeing how those early developments still echo in the way we live now.
Hughes is well-known for her documentaries—more than 50 of them, watched by 250 million viewers worldwide—and her bestsellers, including The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and Venus & Aphrodite. Stephen Fry once called her "the most perfect tour guide I know", which sums up how she works: she takes a vast, distant subject and makes it feel close and easy to follow.
