Dr Bessel van der Kolk returns to How To Academy to share his new paradigm for healing trauma, drawing on his research and his book 'The Body Keeps the Score'.
Dr Bessel van der Kolk is coming to Usher Hall on Wednesday 4 November, returning to How To Academy to talk about trauma and recovery. If you've come across his work before, it'll likely be through The Body Keeps The Score, the global bestseller that argues traumatic experiences leave their imprint on the body as well as the mind.
That book is a good place to start for what he'll be discussing. His main point is that the terror and isolation at the core of trauma literally reshape both brain and body, and that recovery needs to move beyond standard talking and drug therapies to heal the mind, brain and body together. He's spent more than thirty years at the forefront of research and clinical practice, and this talk draws on that.
He works from two sides of the same coin: the cutting edge of neuroscience and decades of experience as an active therapist. He also talks about the power of our relationships — whether in the intimacy of the home or in our wider communities — and how they can both hurt and heal. It's a way of looking at trauma that takes it out of the head and puts it back into the body and the life around it.
