Stand-up show by Dame Meera Syal, drawing on the wisdom of her mother and aunties, with support from Poppy Jay.
Dame Meera Syal brings her show Vigilauntie to the Assembly Rooms on Thursday 29 October, with Poppy Jay joining her on stage. It's a long-running career that's hard to sum up in one go: she's been a comedian, writer, playwright, actress, singer and journalist, and she's worked across almost every corner of British entertainment.
Most people will recognise her from Goodness Gracious Me, the sketch show she co-created that changed British comedy, or as the formidable Granny Ummi in The Kumars at Number 42. Beyond that, she's topped the pop charts, held a professorship at Oxford, and written a musical with Andrew Lloyd Webber. She's also a Dame and a screenwriter, and the first British Asian novelist to be included on the national curriculum.
Vigilauntie draws on the personal side of all that. She talks about the wisdom her mother and aunties passed down, her grandfather's attempts to arrange her marriage, her working life as an actress and writer, and her journey into motherhood. She describes the evening as funny, painful and completely honest.
