Underground stand-up club with a rotating line-up of Irish, Scottish and international comics, hosted by Michael Porter, seven nights a week on the Royal Mile.
The Comedy Cellar runs every night of the week at The Canon's Gait on the Royal Mile, so if you're in the Old Town and fancy a night out, it's always on. It's an underground, five-star rated stand-up room, and they describe the comedy as raw, alternative, and with a rebellious edge. The line-up rotates, pulling in Irish, Scottish and international comics, so you'll get a different mix of voices depending on when you drop in.
Hosting the whole thing is Irish comic Michael Porter, who they describe as a cult figure with a mouth that never holds back. The show has built a reputation as a Fringe favourite and a year-round hit, and it's one of the city's top comedy clubs — the only one offering five-star stand-up on the Royal Mile seven nights a week. It's a good spot if you want something that doesn't feel like a polished tourist show.
Its home, The Canon's Gait, is a bar and live-music venue with a name that goes back to the Canons' Way, the route the canons followed between Holyrood monastery and the city walls. For centuries, Canongate remained a separate burgh outside those walls, sacked repeatedly and at times a dangerous place to live. The cellar bar is particularly popular during the Edinburgh Festival, so it's well-used even when the Fringe isn't on.
