Free, 18+ pub session of traditional Scottish, English, Irish and Scandinavian tunes marking the opening of the Carrying Stream Festival.
The Scottish Storytelling Centre is hosting the opening session of the Carrying Stream Festival at The Canons' Gait on Wednesday 11 November, from 20:15. It's a night of tunes in a pub in the Old Town, and it's the first event of the festival.
The festival, Fรจill Sruth an Eรฒlais, is built around the legacy of Hamish Henderson โ the Scottish folklorist, songwriter and activist. Its ethos is the 'Carrying Stream', the way music, song, spoken word and culture are passed from person to person and from generation to generation. The festival itself started with the Edinburgh Folk Club, and the Scottish Storytelling Centre is part of its revival this year, alongside partners across the city.
Landing the opening session in a pub follows a long Scottish tradition of playing tunes in pubs, something that continues in villages, towns and cities across the country. The session at The Canons' Gait happens regularly throughout the year, and it's an open one: instrumentalists of all levels are welcome to play alongside the regulars. The repertoire is mainly traditional Scottish music, but it also draws in English, Irish and Scandinavian tunes.
