Robert Lloyd Parry reads H.P. Lovecraft's classic horror story, adapted as an immersive spoken-word show based on the papers of Francis Wayland Thurston.
Robert Lloyd Parry brings H.P. Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu to The Banshee Labyrinth on Saturday 14 November, with the reading starting at 19:30 and running for about an hour and a half.
It's a staged reading of Lovecraft's classic horror story, and the way it's set up is part of the draw. Parry reads from the papers of the late Boston anthropologist Francis Wayland Thurston, and the whole thing is framed as an immersion into Lovecraft's world of cosmic horror. The reading follows Thurston's trail through weird archaeology, violent religious rites, cyclopean architecture, and vast forms of life from beyond the stars, with the stories themselves doing the work of transporting the audience into that unsettling territory.
Parry organises the evening himself, so it's his name on the bill and his voice leading the way through the text. If you're already familiar with The Call of Cthulhu, this is a chance to hear it read aloud in a room built for it; if you've never read Lovecraft, it's a good place to start with one of his most famous pieces.
