Free in-person reading session where a facilitator brings short texts on a theme for the group to read and discuss, with no prior knowledge assumed.
READERS 3.2 is at Tills Bookshop on Sunday 25 October, from 10:30 to 11:30 am. This session features The Bookless Bookclub, presented by AGITATE, and it's free to attend.
READERS is a friendly, accessible reading group that looks at photography and visual culture, and it's built to be welcoming regardless of your academic background. The Bookless Bookclub follows that same ethos: a facilitator brings a constellation of short texts — fiction, poetry, theory, song lyrics and writing on visual art — and the group reads and discusses them together in the room. There's no homework to do and no prior knowledge assumed, so you can just turn up and join in. The sessions are themed, with each week focusing on a different subject — past ones have covered 'Ugliness and Female Bodies', 'The Sea' and 'Domestic Feminism'.
The venue is Tills Bookshop, one of Edinburgh's oldest surviving second-hand bookshops, overlooking the Meadows. It was established in 1985 by Rick and Ann Till and taken over and renovated in 2019 by Kate and Joshua McNamara. While you're there, you can also see the exhibition of the winners of the READERS of Edinburgh competition, which is on show in the shop from October through to the end of the year.
