Author talk and book signing by Bonnie Garmus, author of 'Lessons in Chemistry', to launch her new novel 'Peck & Peck', chaired by poet Donna Ashworth.
Bonnie Garmus is coming to Edinburgh New Town Church on Wednesday 11 November, as part of her tour for her new book, Peck & Peck. It's a conversation rather than a reading, with the Sunday Times bestselling poet Donna Ashworth chairing the evening.
If you're coming to this one, it helps to know where Garmus started. She's an American author, born in California and now based in Seattle and London, who burst onto the scene at 64 with her 2022 debut, Lessons in Chemistry. Before that, she spent her career as a copywriter and creative director in technology, medicine and education, so the writing life was a second act. Peck & Peck is her follow-up, and it's a different sort of animal from the first.
Set in 1982 New York City, it follows Batter Gray, a recent college graduate who lands a job at Peck & Peck, the most prestigious poetry quarterly in the world. Once inside, Gray gets drawn into a secret war between the twin Editors in Chief, the Peck brothers. It's described as hugely original, brilliantly funny and peopled with unforgettable characters — and it's that comedy side of things that's front and centre here.

The night is part of Topping & Company Booksellers' literary festival in Edinburgh, so it's one of a few events they're running across the city. Ashworth, who's chairing, is a #1 Sunday Times bestselling poet with over two million followers, so the conversation should be as much about the craft as the story. The event starts at 7pm, with doors open from 6.30pm, at Edinburgh New Town Church, 13 George St, EH2 2PA.
