BAFTA-winning historian David Olusoga presents a talk on overlooked stories of the past, from the world wars to the Industrial Revolution.
Professor David Olusoga brings History's Missing Chapters to the Assembly Rooms on Friday 2 April 2027, starting at 7:30pm. It's a talk that looks at the stories that usually get left out of the history books, and the forces that shape how we understand the past. He draws on examples from the world wars, the Industrial Revolution, and other pivotal moments in global history to fill in those gaps.
If you don't recognise the name, you've almost certainly seen his work. Olusoga is a BAFTA-winning historian, writer, filmmaker and broadcaster who holds a Chair in Public History at the University of Manchester. He's presented numerous series on the BBC, including recent instalments of A House Through Time and Finding Britain's Slave Traders on BBC Two, and has contributed to The One Show and The Guardian. He's also known for interviewing former US President Barack Obama twice, and for reaching the final of the BBC's The Celebrity Traitors.
He's written or co-authored eight books, among them Black & British: A Forgotten History, which won the Longman-History Today Trustees Award and the PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize. That one fits right in with what he'll be talking about here: the overlooked stories and the parts of the past that don't always make the cut.
