Stand-up show 'HAPPY' by Paul Smith, the Hot Water Comedy Club favourite, mixing crowd work and observational comedy.
Paul Smith brings his new show, HAPPY, to the Edinburgh Playhouse on Friday 6 November, part of a tour that's taking him across the UK, Ireland, Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. He's a regular at Hot Water Comedy Club, where he was crowned Liverpool's New Comedian of the Year, and he's also been a finalist at The Leicester Comedian of the Year.
HAPPY is billed as the biggest and boldest show of his career, and it's built around the things he's known for: crowd work, sharp observations and true stories. The performance draws the audience directly into the show, mixing that interactive side with observational material rooted in ordinary life. It arrives after sold-out runs and viral success, so it's a bit of a step up from the club sets he's built his name on.
If you're not familiar with his style, the crowd work is a big part of itβhe talks to the people in the room and lets the night go where it takes him, rather than sticking to a fixed script. That sits alongside the observational stuff, the kind of comedy that comes from watching the small, strange things about everyday life. It's a show that changes depending on who's in the room, so no two nights end up the same.
