The hit musical Mean Girls brings the wit and heart of Tina Fey's 2000s film to the stage, following Cady Heron as she navigates high school social dynamics.
Mean Girls is playing the Edinburgh Playhouse from 17 to 21 November, bringing the story of the 2000s film to the stage. It's a short run, just five days, so if you're planning to go, you'll want to pick your night early.
The plot is the one you know: a high school ruled by 'The Plastics', a clique led by Regina George. Cady Heron, a home-schooled student who's spent most of her life in Africa, is thrown into the mix and spends her time figuring out the social hierarchy and plotting to bring Regina's reign to an end. This stage version updates the story for today, so the Plastics have Snapchat, WhatsApp and Instagram to play with alongside the usual high school politics.
Behind it is a big team. Tina Fey wrote the book, with music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin, who also worked on Legally Blonde. Direction and choreography come from Casey Nicholaw, who did The Book of Mormon, and it's produced by Lorne Michaels, Stuart Thompson and Paramount Pictures. It picked up 12 Tony Awards in 2018, played the West End in the summer of 2024, and was followed by a film that grossed $105 million.
