Screening of the documentary 'No Other Land' followed by a soup and bread supper, part of the Local Cinema Network.
North Edinburgh Arts is screening No Other Land on Thursday 29 October, a Palestinian-Norwegian film that took about half a decade to make. It's a 92-minute documentary (BBFC 15) directed by Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, and it comes as part of the Local Cinema Network, a group of community cinemas across Edinburgh that programme screenings co-curated with and for local communities.
The film centres on Basel Adra, an activist who spent years filming his community in Masafer Yatta being destroyed by Israel's occupation. Along the way, he forms an unlikely alliance with an Israeli journalist who wants to join his fight. It's described as an unflinching account of a community's mass expulsion and as creative resistance to apartheid, and it searches for a path towards equality and justice. Because it was filmed over such a long period, it captures the slow, grinding reality of what's happening on the ground rather than just a snapshot of a single moment.
There's a food element to the night too: soup and bread are served from the doors opening at 5.30pm, before the film starts. It's a good reason to get there early and have a bit of a chat before the lights go down. The screening itself runs for 92 minutes, so you're looking at a fairly standard evening of film rather than a marathon.
