A screening of contemporary Japanese short films, from urban thrillers to animation, curated by the Edinburgh Short Film Festival for an 18+ audience.
Edinburgh Short Film Festival brings a curated night of contemporary Japanese short films to Summerhall on Saturday 14 November, from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm. The session is part of the festival's 'Carte Blanche' series, and the programme is put together by the festival itself, drawing on contemporary Japanese short film and culture.
It's a wide-ranging mix: quirky drama, taut urban thrillers, 2D animation, and a time-travel comedy. The films come from the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia (SSFF & ASIA), which is one of the largest international short film events in Asia. It started in Tokyo in 1999 to introduce Japanese audiences to short-form cinema, and it now showcases creative short films from more than 100 countries, widely regarded as a major launch pad for global cinematic talent.
One thing to keep in mind before you book: the session is for audiences aged 18 and over. There are content warnings for violence, death by gunshot, blood, and offensive language, so it's not one for a casual family afternoon. If you're happy with that, it's a good chance to see a handful of Japanese shorts in one go, from the animated to the live-action, all in a single afternoon.
