Halloween screening of Jerzy Kawalerowicz's 1961 Polish horror film 'Mother Joan of the Angels' at Carnegie Hall in Dunfermline, part of the Samizdat Eastern European Film Festival.
Mother Joan of the Angels screens at the Studio at Carnegie Hall on Friday 30 October, from 19:30 to 21:30. It's a 1961 Polish classic directed by Jerzy Kawalerowicz, starring Lucyna Winnicka and Mieczyslaw Voit. The film is an austere religious horror set in a remote 17th-century convent, following a priest sent to investigate reports of demonic possession. It's a landmark of Polish cinema, and given the date, it's a Halloween screening.
The screening is part of the fifth Samizdat Eastern European Film Festival, which takes its name from the clandestine dissemination of censored and forbidden texts in communist states. This year's festival runs a special strand called 'Re-membering the Archive', a collection of documentaries that review the past. The festival itself spreads across Glasgow, Cromarty, Edinburgh, Dunfermline and Aberdeen, so this is one stop in a wider programme.
This particular date is a collaboration between Peacock Cinema and the festival, and it's their first-ever screening in the town. The film is preceded by a short in-person welcome and a pre-recorded introduction, so you'll get a bit of context before the credits roll. Carnegie Hall, named after the town's most famous son, Andrew Carnegie, is nearing its centenary and is due to close in 2027 for a major refurbishment, which makes this one of the remaining opportunities to catch a show there. Pre-show drinks are served at Tiffany's bar, which looks out over the Forth Bridge.
