Screening of Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby at Lauriston Castle, part of New Media Scotland's Centenary Programme of 1920s films, with a 1920s dress code.
Lauriston Castle is screening Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby on Saturday 5 December, starting at 7.30pm. It's part of New Media Scotland's Centenary Programme, a series of films made in or set in the 1920s, so this is one of several screenings they've put together around that theme.
Luhrmann co-wrote and directed this Academy Award-winning adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel, and it stars Leonardo DiCaprio as the titular Jay Gatsby, with Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan and Elizabeth Debicki. The story follows young writer Nick Carraway, who moves in next door to the mysterious millionaire Gatsby, a man known for throwing extravagant parties. It's a high-energy take on the book, and the 1920s setting is a big part of the whole thing.
That fits well with the venue. Lauriston Castle is an intact 16th-century L-plan tower house with substantial Victorian extensions and early 20th-century interiors, left to the nation in 1926 by its last private owner, Mrs Reid. It sits in the Almond area of Edinburgh, and the gardens open onto views across the Firth of Forth. The grounds are free to enter all year round, while the house itself opens at set times for guided tours, alongside talks, creative workshops and screenings like this one. A 1920s dress code is encouraged, so if you've got something that fits the era, it's a good night to bring it out.
