A series of friendly lecture mornings with a different guest speaker on history and culture, followed by coffee and a sweet treat at Lauriston Castle.
Lauriston Castle is running a series of guest lectures this autumn, with mornings on 1, 6, 8, 20, 22, 28 and 29 October, and 12, 14, 17 and 19 November. Each one starts at 10:30am, and the format is the same every time: a guest speaker takes the floor, and then the audience is invited to meet them over coffee and a sweet treat. Mimi's café is on-site if you want to stay on for lunch afterwards.
The programme covers a fair bit of ground across history and culture. There's Victorian life, the 'lost' photographer Lady Alice Kerr, and the East of Scotland witch trials, so it's not just one subject stretched over several weeks. You can pick and choose the ones that actually interest you rather than committing to the whole run.
It helps to know where you're heading. Lauriston Castle is a 16th-century tower house with Victorian extensions and early 20th-century interiors, set in gardens that open onto views across the Firth of Forth. The house and grounds hold a group of diverse collections left to the city by the castle's last residents. The house itself is visited by joining a guided tour, while the gardens are free to enter all year round, so you could easily make a morning of it and wander the grounds before or after a lecture.
