Costumed living history tour of Lauriston Castle in 1905, with residents and staff sharing Halloween traditions and grisly stories from the past.
Halloween In The Castle comes to Lauriston Castle on Saturday 31 October, with two costumed tours running at 13:30 and 15:00. It's a living history performance set in 1905, put on by the Edinburgh Living History team who present the castle's past in Edwardian dress. You'll spend the afternoon meeting the house's residents and staff, who talk through the origins and traditions of Halloween in Scotland.
There are three characters to meet. Mrs Mackay, the housekeeper, shares her memories of celebrating the festival of Samhain in the Highlands; Mrs Reid, a keen photographer, talks about her fascination with the double-exposure techniques of the day; and Mr Barton tells grisly stories from both Lauriston Castle and Edinburgh's past. The work also marked the Lauriston Castle Centenary, and there's on-site lunch available at Mimi's café if you're staying for the afternoon.
